Living on the lifeblood of others, that's you. Or, you will be if you choose to play Signet City, the new game from Jump Over The Age, creators of In Other Waters and Citizen Sleeper. That's because it's a first-person fungalpunk RPG in which you're a spore-born parasite taking root in the brains of the inhabitants of a British coastal town.

Read more

Signet City is an RPG where you play a brain fungus feeding off the emotions of your host, like a mushroom-themed Monsters, Inc

<ns2:content medium="image" url="https://assetsio.gnwcdn.com/signet-city_0000_2026-06-18-15_28_27-Greenshot.jpg?width=690&quality=85&format=jpg&auto=webp" />

The broil of ideas that make up Signet City have been growing in Gareth Damian Martin's head for years and they're about fit to burst. The creator of In Other Waters and Citizen Sleeper describes their new game as a first-person fungalpunk RPG, a game that draws inspiration from the history and culture of the northern England, the whalepunk tech of Dishonored's world, and lifts systems from cyberpunk tabletop game The Veil. But it's as much a manifestation of projects they're reacting against, as those they're reverently lifting from.

We'll get into all that, but put the highbrow, high concept references to the side for a moment. It's maybe easier to think of Signet City as a bit like Monsters, Inc, but with more mushrooms.

Read more

Citizen Sleeper creator explains why they're taking a swing with their new RPG

<ns2:content medium="image" url="https://assetsio.gnwcdn.com/signet-city_0006_2026-06-18-15_28_03-Greenshot.jpg?width=690&quality=85&format=jpg&auto=webp" />

It's clear from Signet City's reveal trailer that it's going to be an unusual game. After all, you'll be playing a fungal brain parasite that influences multiple hosts across an algae-powered city.

But, when creator Gareth Damian Martin and I spoke, they didn't just want to talk about how their game worked – if anything, they seemed happy to leave that discussion until players could play it to find out for themselves. Instead, they wanted to say why they were making this game, and why they were doing it now.

After all, in an industry where game developers are closing up shop daily, making a first-person fungalpunk RPG isn't the safe bet.
